Initial
restoration work at Lawndale was completed in October 1990,
which included the stabilization of the pier foundations
and brick chimneys, as well as the restoration of the aluminum-shingled
roof. The work was begun with the assistance of a $10,500
grant from the Florida Department of State through the Historic
preservation Grants-In-Aid program.
In
addition to purchasing the property, Brevard County committed
$65,000 toward stabilization and completion of the restoration
master plan by the architectural firm of Yeilding and Provost,
Inc. of Orlando, FL. Initial restoration efforts were guided
by a committee comprised of representatives of Brevard County
and the City of Rockledge, surrounding neighborhood residents,
and local historic preservationists.
After
securing an agreement with Brevard County to lease the Williams
house for a nominal fee, the Preservation and Education
Trust applied for and received another small grant to begin
replacing the aluminum windows currently in place with replicas
of the original windows. PET also submitted an application
for a special category grant with the Florida Bureau of
Historic Preservation in May, 2001. After much debate, the
2002 Florida Legislature passed a budget that included full
funding for these types of grants including $317,000 for
the second phase of restoration at Lawndale. Restoration
of the Williams homestead will resume in August of 2002
and will continue for 18 months.
